One in eight American women (13%) will develop breast cancer in their lifetime. For women in the U.S., breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer.
Breast Cancer Isn’t in My Family
5-10% of breast cancer cases occur in people with a known gene mutation. 85% of breast cancers occur in people with no family history of breast cancer. Although many factors may contribute to a patient’s risk of developing breast cancer, women of average risk should begin screening starting at age 40. Those with a family history or other risk factors should start screening at an earlier age.
