What’s the Difference Between 2D and 3D Mammograms?

Many people are familiar with mammograms as they are an extremely effective method of checking for breast cancer. Mammograms are a powerful invention and to a great extent, a lifesaver. By detecting breast cancer early, many of the consequences of late diagnosis can be averted.

What is a Mammogram?

Let’s start by understanding what a Mammogram is. In very simple terms, a mammogram is simply an X-ray image of the breast.

Mammograms are used by doctors to discover the early onset of breast cancer. Regular mammograms help to detect breast cancer in its very early stages, years before the overt symptoms begin to show their face and cause havoc in the body.

What’s the Difference Between a 2D and 3D Mammogram?

There are two primary types of mammograms: 2D and 3D mammograms. Many do not know the difference between these two procedures and might not know which they need more when faced with a decision.

Let’s learn the difference between a 2D and 3D mammogram:

2D mammogram, also known as conventional digital mammography, is a mammogram procedure where only two images are taken of each breast: One image from the side and one from the top.

A 3D mammogram on the other hand is a kind of mammogram that has a high resolution. This type of mammogram is more advanced than the 2D mammogram and it takes multiple pictures of the breast tissue from a lot of different angles. By taking multiple shots or “slices”, the radiologist can get clear and top-quality images of the breast tissue.

A 3D mammogram screening feels no different than a 2D mammogram. The distinction is basically in the number of images that can be taken and how such images will be processed by the machine.

Is a 3D Mammogram Better Than a 2D?

Health experts believe that 3D mammography provides significant benefits to patients that outweigh the advantages provided by standard 2D mammography.

For patients with dense breasts, 3D mammograms are the best option. It allows doctors to discover breast cancer at an early stage when it is most curable. A 3D mammogram’s numerous pictures allow for simple viewing and study of several layers of breast tissue.

Who Needs 3D Mammography?

3D Mammography is a procedure that would benefit everyone on a yearly basis. It is particularly necessary for those who have breast problems such as a suspicious lump or thickening in the breast. Individuals who have breast implants will also find this procedure helpful.

3D mammography should be considered by any person who requires breast screening.
